Curbstone Coaches looking for new members

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Curbstone Coaches is an organization founded in 1959 that aims to keep the sport alive in the Mahoning Valley by engaging with and honoring local sports figures.

“We have had Heisman Trophy winners who have come into this field in football,” said Frank Nolasco, president of Curbstone Coaches. “We had professional basketball players. We had a professional basketball team. We have this whole story here. I don’t want to lose it. Our organization does not want to lose it. So, we’re going to go on and on and on and on and on with every year perpetuating this. “

Curbstone Coaches has around 150 members, but is looking to grow.

“Our organization is made up of men and women who are not necessarily coaches or have been coaches, but people who are interested in sport,” said Nolasco. “People interested in doing something for the community, spreading it and sustaining it. “

Curbstone Coaches host a weekly lunch every Monday where a different guest is invited to speak.

“So far we’ve had coach Doug Phillips from Youngstown State University,” added Nolasco. “Ron Strollo was there. Jim Tressel is always a big hit when he comes to talk to us. Boom Boom Mancini has been there.

The group also pays tribute to former athletes, coaches and administrators in the region at their annual Hall of Fame banquet. To date, nearly 500 people have been inducted. The organization also honors many local high school athletes each year.

“We have scholarships available for some of our young high school athletes,” Nolasco said. “We present trophies to the best male and female athlete of the year. If you are a high school state champion, our organization makes sure you are invited to one of our lunches. We give you a plaque and make a big proclamation.

Curbstone Coaches meet on Mondays from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. at the Avion on the Water Banquet Center.
