PORTLAND – Gilbert H. Seekings Jr., 74, of Portland, NY, passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 29, 2022, at home with his beloved wife by his side, following a courageous and fierce battle against the cancer.
He was born June 27, 1948 in Dunkirk, NY to the late Gilbert and Maxine Seekings.
Gil attended and graduated from Brocton High School, Class of 1967. Upon graduation, Gil entered the United States Army, he was honorably discharged after serving six years.
He was a life member of the Westfield Fish and Game Club, the National Rifle Association, and a 40-year member of the John W. Dill Post 434 American Legion of Brocton, a 48-year member of Westfield Moose Lodge 118, a member of the Brocton -Portland Senior Citizens and served as a deacon at Brocton Fellowship Church.
Gil has worked at many local wine farms, Welch Foods, Blackstone, and retired after 20 years as a stationary engineer at SUNY Fredonia.
In his youth, Gil was a motorcycle enthusiast. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He and his wife liked to go to garage sales. He enjoyed going to auctions, going out to eat with friends, and really enjoyed attending social events and handing out sweets, earning him the nickname “Candy Man”. For many years Gil dressed as “Santa Claus” and visited many local churches, nursing homes and various businesses in the area. He has adored his many dogs and cats over the years.
He was a multi-talented tradesman, including mechanics, carpentry, and metal fabrication. Gil specializes in repairing and rebuilding lawn mowers and restarting anything with an engine. He was eager and took great pride in sharing his talents and skills with his interested nephews.
But above all, Gil enjoyed spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife, Edith, Gil is survived by two sisters: Margaret (late David) Szumigala and Lucinda (Michael) Laver; and a sister-in-law, Deborah Gillis. He is survived by his nephews: Daniel (Pamela) Farnham, Eddie (Karen) Nalepa Jr., Matt Przytula, David Szumigala and James (Rosalina) Farnham. His beloved grand-nephews: Ethan Nalepa and Dustin and Benjamin Farnham; and a great-niece also survive.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Louise Seek-ings Will; stepmother, Irene Lynch; brother-in-law, Arthur Gillis; a nephew, Tommy Przytula; and a niece, Stefany Nalepa.
Relatives and friends are invited to call Saturday, July 2 from 10 a.m. to noon at Morse Funeral Home, 51 Highland Ave., Brocton, NY, where funeral services will follow immediately at noon with Reverend Sandy Ball of Fellowship Church in Brocton officer. Interment will follow at Portland Evergreen Cemetery in Portland where full military honors will be bestowed.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial contributions in Gil’s honor be sent to Westfield Stray Cat Rescue (59 East Main St., Westfield, NY 14787), Fellowship Church (148 West Main Street Brocton, NY 14716 ), or the Lake Shore Humane Society (431 E. Chestnut Street, Dunkirk NY 14048).
