TRAVERSE CITY – The Great Lakes Children’s Museum offers weekly programs for preschool and elementary school students.

Kid’s Craft Lab begins at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on November 22. Make a turkey tail fan out of scrap paper. Storytime Adventures features the “I’m a Turkey” tale at 10:30 am, 1 pm and 3:30 pm on November 24-26. Register at glcm.org.

Playgroups are coming back

GREILICKVILLE – 5toONE and NMCAA Early Head Start are offering playgroup gatherings from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on November 24 and December 8 at the Great Lakes Children’s Museum. Parents can bring children 5 and under. Development activities and a snack are included. Register at bit.ly/PlayGLCM.

Thanksgiving feast

TRAVERSE CITY – The Kitchen is offering their Thanksgiving feast to go from 9 a.m. to noon on November 25. A meal for six costs $ 159.95 and includes roast turkey, sausage and sage stuffing, mashed potatoes, candied yams, cranberry sauce, rolls, and the pumpkin pie. Simple dishes and side dishes are also available.

Suggested banned words

SAULT STE. MARY – Lake Superior State University is accepting submissions for its 2022 banned word list. The 2021 list included “COVID-19”, “Karen” and more. “

The deadline is November 30 at 8 a.m. The winners are announced at the end of December.

Michigan author releases novel

TRAVERSE CITY – Traverse City author Thomas L. Clark recently published his Michigan-based debut novel, “The Preacher’s Obsession”. The story takes place in the fictional town of Slippery Flats and follows three Homeland Security officers who try to stop a preacher from a planned Labor Day attack. The eBook costs $ 4.99 on Amazon.com.

Library receives grant

BELLAIRE – The Bellaire Public Library is one of 100 small rural libraries selected for postgraduate funding under the American Library Association‘s Libraries Transforming Communities initiative.

The northern Michigan facility aims to use the grant to sponsor Bellaire Reads in May and June 2022. BPL will purchase books that Bellaire Reads attendees can obtain for free.

Playing for paws

SUTTONS BAY – Premonitions is hosting the Play for Paws event until December 15th. The arcade is collecting donations for Cherryland Humane Society. Items accepted include dry and canned dog and cat food, peanut butter, pet beds, cleaning supplies, toys and more. Call 231-946-5116.

Magazine Entries

PETOSKEY – Walloon Writers Review is seeking nominations for its seventh edition. The literary magazine accepts short stories, poetry, creative essays and writing as well as nature photography. Submissions should be sent out on December 15th on walloonwriters.com.

Poetry submissions

TRAVERSE CITY – The Traverse Area District Library is accepting submissions for Poets Night through January 25. Writers in northern Michigan can submit up to three pieces.

Registration fees are $ 10 for individuals, $ 5 for students and seniors.

The selected poems appear in the PNO Chapbook.

Call for donations

EMPIRE – The Glen Lake Woman’s Club is in need of a donation of jewelry to sell at the Glen Lake Woman’s Club Art Fair in July. Proceeds from the sale provide college scholarships to senior graduates of Glen Lake Community School attending Northwestern Michigan College.
