New hospital safety ratings from Leapfrog Group highlight declining patient experience in pandemic era

Data reveals additional details on impact of COVID-19 on patient safety

WASHINGTON, May 10, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The Leapfrog Group, a national watchdog organization of employers and other purchasers focused on healthcare safety, today released the Spring 2022 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, which assigns a letter grade to nearly 3,000 US general hospitals based on more than 30 patient safety metrics. The safety rating is the only rating solely focused on a hospital’s ability to protect patients from preventable errors, accidents, injuries and infections. The latest ratings provide insight into the impact of COVID-19 on patient safety, with several metrics included in the rating showing a significant decline.

Recent studies have shown that the pandemic has reversed years of progress in patient safety efforts. Updated data included in the safety note, some of which reflects a pandemic-era timeline, reinforces these findings and demonstrates how patient care has deteriorated due to pressures on the healthcare system and the workforce.

Updated Hospital Safety Notes are released alongside a new report from Leapfrog Group, Patient Experience During the Pandemic: Inpatient Adult Care. The report provides additional insight into how patient experience declined between the pre-pandemic period and the mid-pandemic period.

Of the more than 30 patient safety measures used to calculate hospital safety ratings, there are five patient experience measures that research shows have a direct link to patient safety outcomes . For example, better communication with providers and about medications can lead to lower rates of hospital-acquired illnesses such as sepsis and blood clots, fewer surgical complications, and lower incidences of respiratory failure.

Across all states, highlights of the Spring 2022 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Score results include:

  • Thirty‐three percent of hospitals received an “A”, 24% received a “B”, 36% received a “C”, 7% received a “D”, and less than 1% received an “F”. “.
  • Five states with the highest percentages of “A” hospitals are North Carolina, Virginia, Utah, Coloradoand Michigan.
  • There were no “A” hospitals in Wyoming, West Virginiathe District of Colombiaor North Dakota.

“Despite an overall decline in patient experience ratings, the Spring Ratings continue to show significant variation in safety performance across US hospitals,” Binder said. “This variability is a constant reminder that the public needs access to information about the safest hospitals so that patients can make the best decision for themselves and their loved ones.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital rating program based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and patient harm. The rating system is fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated semi-annually in the fall and spring.
