The Cochranites donate thousands of dollars to the Humane Society in honor of the late Betty White

Over $ 3,000 in donations were made in honor of Betty White to the Cochrane and Area Humane Society.

Fans of the late Betty White have found a way to pay tribute to the actress and animal lover, who died on December 31 just weeks before her 100th birthday.

Perhaps best known for playing in Golden girls and for her crass humor, White was also a staunch advocate for animal rights and rescue organizations, and even published a book called Betty & Friends: My Life at the Zoo, where she spoke about her work with the non-profit animal associations.

Her legacy lives on through a viral fan-created campaign encouraging people to donate $ 5 to an animal rescue organization of their choice on her birthday on January 17.

Many took it upon themselves to embark on the Betty White challenge before the date and go over the requested $ 5.

“We’ve already seen a lot of donations come in her honor,” said Cochrane and Area Humane Society communications coordinator Lisa Kedian. “The last time I checked we had already raised $ 3,905.”

Kedian said she thinks the challenge is a great way to honor White’s animal advocacy legacy so her work can continue even after she is gone.

“She was known for her charitable work and her advocacy for animal causes,” Kedian said. “She had been involved with the Los Angeles SPCA since the 1960s and helped raise funds for various rescues.

“She has dedicated a large portion of her life to rescuing animals, and unfortunately with her passing it is a wonderful way to continue her legacy.”

After reviewing the entirety Daddy’s Girls series in 2020, Kedian said White’s character Rose is a star who will always be loved.

“The fact that she also advocates for animals and that is happening now, I certainly think that will be something that will continue every year on her behalf,” she said.

Cochrane Home Treasures donated $ 2,000 to ACSS on behalf of the Betty White Challenge when they heard about it last week, store manager Cayley Breeze said.

“Like most, we heard about it online after Betty White passed away,” she said. “I think this is a great initiative to continue in her memory and a great way to give back to your local humanitarian society or shelter.”

White saved many animals throughout her long life and among some of her most substantial efforts, she also paid to evacuate otters and penguins from a New Orleans aquarium after Hurricane Katrina and a supported the work of the Morris Animal Foundation to develop cures for feline leukemia and parvovirus.

She was also honored by the American Humane Association for her work with the organization for seven decades.
